The winter visitor who stays on

A few weeks of winter sun, then a few months, then most of the year. When does a visitor turn into a resident, and which papers change?

Benidorm has always had its winter visitors. They arrive as the days shorten at home and leave when spring comes back. Some of them, little by little, stay longer each year, until one day they realise they live here. Their paperwork, often, has not kept up.

While you are a visitor, the NIE is usually all you need, for a rented flat, a bank account or a purchase. Living here is another matter. Spain records residence according to your passport, and the step that matches yours is worth taking before anyone has to point it out.

For Europeans, residence means registering on form EX-18 for the green certificate once you have lived in Spain for more than three months. A retired European shows a pension and health cover. The number you were given for your flat is simply carried over.

For British people and other non-EU nationals, it is not a matter of filling in a form here. Staying beyond the Schengen limit needs a visa, applied for at a Spanish consulate before the move. For retirees, the usual route is non-lucrative residence, and the TIE card follows once you arrive with the visa.

In every case, the padrón at the town hall is a good first step. In Benidorm you can register at the town hall or at one of its district offices, the Extensiones Administrativas, without an appointment. The padrón records your address and the other offices often ask for its certificate, but it does not change your status on its own, and tax residence is a separate question for an adviser.

If staying means more than paperwork, with a home to sell elsewhere, belongings to ship and a household to move, AnchorLess can organise the relocation itself. The NIE and the registrations remain a short list of steps that we prepare with you.
